AFL greats learn about mining innovation
Two innovative Australian Football League (AFL) greats recently spread their wings to learn about innovation in mining. Western Bulldogs’ legend Doug Hawkins (The Hawk) and Hawthorn Hawks’ great Gary Buckenara were both interested to learn about the major benefits to be gained from ensuring that lubricants start clean and stay clean.
They were guests at the official opening of Techenomics International’s new premises in Balikpapan in the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan. The visit coincided with a promotional tour by the duo aimed at increasing awareness of and participation in Australian Football in Indonesia.
They were given a tour of the impressive new premises and also learned about the innovative, independent condition monitoring methods used by Techenomics, which specialises in fluid management and oil analysis services for the mining, resources, energy and manufacturing industries.
Techenomics’ CEO Chris Adsett says increased demand for its innovative services in the developing coal and mineral mining regions of Kalimantan led to the company’s Indonesian division, PT Tekenomiks Indonesia, relocating to the larger premises. Techenomics also has divisions in Mongolia, Australia, Thailand and Turkey.
Chris Adsett, who is a life-long supporter of the Footscray Bulldogs, which became the Western Bulldogs in 1996, says both players were innovative in the way they played the game and were very interested in the innovative methods of Techenomics which has led to the company’s growth, particularly in Indonesia.
Legendary Australian Football coach Mick Malthouse, who recently became the longest serving coach in AFL history, has described The Hawk as the greatest player he has coached. After making his debut for Footscray in 1978 as a teenager, Hawkins made a name for himself as one of the finest wingers the game has seen, so much so that at the Bulldogs’ home ground, Western Oval, one of the wings was named the Doug Hawkins Wing.
In 1994, he broke Ted Whitten’s long-standing club record of 321 games for Footscray. He played 329 games and kicked 216 goals for the club but spent the final season of his career in 1995 at Fitzroy Football Club where he played 21 games and kicked 11 goals before announcing his retirement. Whitten and Hawkins have both been named in the Bulldogs Team of the Century.
He was accompanied in Balikpapan by great midfielder Gary Buckenara who averaged almost three goals per game during his eight year career with Hawthorn after first playing senior football for Subiaco in the West Australian Football League. During his time at Hawthorn he played 154 games, kicked 293 goals, won four premierships and played in one losing grand final team. His career ended early due to knee injuries and he moved into coaching. In 2003 he was named in the Hawks Team of the Century.
