Get the best from transformer oil

chris-adsett-ceoAnalysis provides early warning
Oil plays a vital role in keeping transformers running efficiently and effectively, and analysis of transformer oil provides operators with a window into the equipment, through which they can judge whether it is working at its best and detect possible problems before they result in costly downtime, repairs and loss of production.

Techenomics International specialises in fluid management services and the independent company’s primary service is analysis of all types of oil and fluids, including transformer oils.

The primary function of transformer oil is to insulate and cool a transformer. It must have high dielectric strengththermal conductivity and chemical stability, and must keep these properties when held at high temperatures for extended periods.

Transformer oil is used in oil-filled transformers, some types of high-voltage capacitors, fluorescent lamp ballasts, and some types of high-voltage switches and circuit breakers.

Techenomics’ CEO Chris Adsett says oil quality is one of the major factors regulating the competence of transformers. “The dielectric strength of transformer oil is essential to ensure effective functioning of transformers but at the same time, it is extremely sensitive to its hydration. Oil deteriorates through ageing and becomes oxidised with the increase in moisture.”

He says oil analysis plays an important role in increasing the life cycle of all engines, transformers and oil-related equipment. “Analysis of oil proves very useful in preventing unnecessary faults and breakdowns in engines and machines because it acts as an early warning system for maintenance staff to prioritise their working areas.

“Analysis of transformer oil not only provides information about the oil, but also enables the detection of other possible problems, including contact arcing, ageing insulating paper and other latent faults, which can cause serious problems if left unchecked.”

As an independent fluid management specialist, Techenomics has thorough knowledge of the role of oil in transformers, the best methods for oil testing, and the analysis process. The company has years of experience in this specialised field, operates fully equipped and certified laboratories, and has a team of qualified technicians ensuring full attention is paid to the samples and the analysis process.

“Techenomics’ experts are always on hand to provide thorough advice, testing services and analysis to ensure operators get the best from their transformer oil,” Chris Adsett says. “They are also happy to conduct on-site visits to tailor analysis services to the unique operating environments of operators.

“As an independent provider of total fluid management services, Techenomics aim is to ensure clients get the best possible life, productivity and value for money from their oil and fluids.”
